Interactive CD-ROM "Low Back Pain, diagnosis and comprehension"

This CD-ROM was released in January 1997 and was created for the health care professionals as well as patients who desire information on the many possible underlying diseases which may cause back pain. In this time of managed care, patients as well as health care professionals need as much informtion as possible.

Back pain is a complicated condition which in most cases resolves within four to six weeks and is caused by uncomplicated muscular strains. But back pain may be only the symptom of an underlying disease which requires treatment. Conditions such as gastric ulcer, pancreatitis, aortic aneurism and over 100 other conditions may be the etiology of the back pain. These conditions are summarized in a "disease summary" but are accessed in a unique interactive algorithm which gives the clinician choices which prompt tests or procedures and finally lead to specific diseases.

Using three dimensional models and animations, the user is taken through the spine to view disorders such as herniated discs, spondylolisthesis and spinal stenosis from inside the spinal canal. For the first time, complex pathology can be demonstrated using modern computer graphics. This section of the program is used to educate patients so that they better understand therapeutic options. Clinical Outcome Studies

In the age of managed care, there is an increasing need to demonstrate quality of care. While price of medical care has been the determining factor in choosing providers, there is a consensus that once price is lowered to a "bottom line", that clinical outcome studies will be used by Managed Care organizations to determine which providers will be granted contracts. Outcome Therapy has been involved in clinical outcome studies since 1990 and has accumulated over 1000 patients in a prospective non-surgical outcome study on low back rehabilitation and over 4000 patients in a study of spinal surgery. scientific papers and abstracts co-written by Dr. Minkow have been presented to The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, The North American Spine Society, The American Back Society, The Western Orthopedic Association, The Texas Orthopedic Association and The Simmons Surgical Society.
